We can hardly believe we are already approaching June. The first half of the year has been filled with exciting experiences, memorable adventures, and wonderful achievements, and we are looking forward to seeing what the rest of the year will bring for everyone.
With the arrival of warmer weather, we have been able to spend much more time outdoors, which has been greatly enjoyed by both members and staff. One of our biggest projects this season has been bringing our ideas for the new sensory garden to life. The garden has become a calm, peaceful, and welcoming outdoor space for our members to relax and enjoy, and we were delighted to officially open it during our Summer Showcase event.
While our trusty minibus enjoyed a well-earned makeover in the garage, we made the most of a variety of local outings. We are fortunate to be surrounded by beautiful natural spaces, and our members have thoroughly enjoyed walks in the sunshine. Trips to local pubs for drinks, conversation, and games such as Uno and Jenga have been especially popular. We have also enjoyed visits to Charlton Lakes, where members spent time feeding the ducks and geese, relaxing in the park, and making use of the outdoor gym equipment. Shopping trips to Newbury were a particular highlight for some of our members, alongside several visits to local garden centres to source items for the sensory garden.
This month’s themed activities have also provided many opportunities to develop new skills and try new experiences. Members enjoyed learning circus skills, including juggling, tumbling, and tightrope walking, while our Eurovision celebrations brought plenty of creativity and fun through handmade flags and a lively karaoke session. We also took part in a range of practical activities, including making salt dough, fresh pasta, and our regular Friday cooking sessions with Chef Wendy.
During Mental Health Awareness Week, we proudly made and wore green ribbons while taking part in positive and meaningful discussions surrounding the importance of mental health and wellbeing. These sessions encouraged openness, support, and reflection, and it was wonderful to see such thoughtful engagement from everyone involved.
We have also loved welcoming students from Sparsholt College, who kindly continue to visit us to run dance sessions for our members. These sessions are always incredibly special, with routines choreographed and taught by the students themselves. Watching the confidence, creativity, and talent from everyone involved is truly inspiring.
Our Summer Showcase was another major highlight and something we are incredibly proud of. It was wonderful to officially open the sensory garden and celebrate the hard work that has gone into creating such a valuable new space for our members. During the event, members performed “This Is Me,” delivering a heartfelt and moving performance that left hardly a dry eye in the room. The song holds special meaning for all of us at James’ Place, and the dedication shown by the members while learning both the lyrics and Makaton was truly remarkable. A special mention must go to Lawrence, who bravely performed the solo. Lawrence embraced the challenge with enthusiasm and commitment, working tirelessly to perfect the performance, and we could not be prouder.
Finally, we would like to say a heartfelt thank you to everyone who has continued to support us throughout the month. We are especially grateful to all those who attended the Summer Showcase; your support means so much to both our members and staff.
This month has been filled with laughter, positivity, kindness, and achievement, and we are excited to see what June has in store.
