Dear Gentle JP Readers, October has been a thrilling month at James’ Place, filled with creativity, exploration, and a touch of spookiness to close out the month! From baking and Diwali celebrations to historic outings and Halloween fun, our members have made fantastic memories while building skills and friendships along the way.
A Week of Whisks, Wonders, and Winning Bakes!
To start the month, members participated in the James’ Place Bake Off Competition, where they crafted a stunning multi-coloured layer cake and took home the winning title! This week was packed with delicious creations, as members also baked, a James’ Place biscuit house with intricate designs, a deliciously creamy cheesecake, and a traditional apple crumble to celebrate autumn. This experience helped members sharpen their cooking and life skills while working together in the kitchen, measuring, mixing, and decorating.
Diwali – Festival of Light
During the second week, we turned our focus to Diwali, the Festival of Lights, which celebrates the triumph of light over darkness. Members had the opportunity to learn about this vibrant festival and enjoy making Diwali-themed crafts, including colourful paper lanterns to illuminate James’ Place, beautiful suncatchers to brighten our windows and other festive Diwali decorations that filled our space with warmth and colour. The crafts allowed members to learn about cultural traditions while exploring their creativity, bringing joy and beauty to James’ Place.
Pumpkin Patch Pals
The last week of October brought a special treat for our James’ Place members as we ventured out to Rotherwick Pumpkin Patch for a festive day of pumpkin picking! This outing was an exciting way to enjoy the crisp autumn air, explore the colourful fields, and, of course, find the perfect pumpkins to bring back to James’ Place.
Upon arriving at Rotherwick Pumpkin Patch, our members were greeted by fields brimming with Teamwork and support pumpkins of all shapes, sizes, and colours. Everyone set out to find the pumpkin that spoke to them—some hunted for the biggest ones, while others preferred perfectly round pumpkins for their creative designs.
Once back at James’ Place, the real creativity began! With their chosen pumpkins lined up and ready, members eagerly started carving. Some opted for classic jack-o’-lantern faces with big smiles and triangular eyes, while others crafted more intricate designs such as a witch’s cat and spooky monsters. It was wonderful to see each member’s personality shine through their creations.
As they carved, members had a chance to practice fine motor skills, build patience, and express their creativity. There was a sense of accomplishment in turning a simple pumpkin into a work of art, and the results were fantastic! By the end, our space was filled with grinning, spooky, and friendly pumpkin faces, each one glowing with the spirit of Halloween.
We’re already looking forward to next year’s pumpkin-picking adventure, but for now, our members can enjoy the warm glow of their jack-o’-lanterns, and the happy memories of a day well spent.
Strikes and Smiles
This month, our James’ Place members enjoyed an exciting day out at the bowling alley!
This outing was a wonderful way for everyone to get active, bond as a group, and engage in a bit of friendly competition.
Beyond the fun, bowling was also a chance for our members to develop the important skill of hand –eye coordination, which improved with each roll as members learned how to aim and adjust their approach.
This bowling trip was a fantastic opportunity for our members to relax, enjoy themselves, and bond with one another outside of James’ Place.
Ghoulish Games and Spooky Fun
Halloween at James’ Place was nothing short of magical this year! Our members enjoyed a day packed with costumes, games, delicious treats, and, of course, plenty of spooky fun. The party was a fantastic way for everyone to embrace their Halloween spirit, get creative, and celebrate together. We kicked off the party with some classic games that brought lots of laughter and excitement. Members took turns passing the spooky-wrapped parcel, eagerly unwrapping layers to uncover fun little surprises. Each turn was filled with suspense, cheers, and a few spooky sound effects to set the mood! The members also play Musical Statues, As the Halloween tunes played, everyone had a blast dancing and striking their best statue poses when the music stopped. From witches to skeletons, everyone showed off their dance moves—and their ability to stay still as a statue!
No Halloween party is complete without themed treats, and this year’s selection didn’t disappoint! Our spooky snack table featured: Mummy hotdogs (Wrapped in “bandages” of flaky pastry, these hotdogs looked deliciously frightful and were a big hit) and Halloween fudge (colourful and loaded with creepy toppings, these fudge squares added a sweet touch to the spooky feast.
The party wouldn’t have been complete without our Halloween disco! With the room decked out in cobwebs, pumpkins, and flickering lights, members danced to Halloween hits and took turns at the karaoke mic, belting out their favourite spooky songs and classic anthems. Some even performed in costume, making it a lively and unforgettable part of the celebration.
This month has been filled with laughter, creativity, and shared joy. Members got to relax, have fun, and enjoy each other’s company in a festive and welcoming setting. We like to wish all our gentle JP readers a very Happy Halloween! And we look forward to sharing with you our next months adventures.
