Dear gentle JP Readers, November has been a month full of excitement, learning, and meaningful moments at James’ Place! From building travel confidence as part of our ASDAN course to raising funds for a great cause and exploring the wonders of Marwell Zoo, our members have embraced every opportunity to grow, give back, and create unforgettable memories.
A Journey to Independence
At James’ Place, fostering independence and building life skills are at the heart of everything we do. Recently, a group of our enthusiastic members took on a meaningful challenge as part of their ASDAN ‘Towards Independence: Using Transport’ course. Their mission? To plan a journey, navigate public transport, and enjoy a treat at Costa in Basingstoke town. This experience wasn’t just about reaching a destination—it was about learning, growing, and celebrating newfound independence. This course helped members develop both knowledge and skills such as using bus timetables and maps, identifying the best way to get to Basingstoke town, understanding timings and connections. The members and JP team also role-played discussions, members practiced asking for tickets and interacting with drivers—a big step towards feeling confident in public spaces. The members also learnt budgeting skills, this included planning how much money to bring for bus fares and their Costa treat, ensuring they could manage costs independently.
On the bus, this was their first time navigating public transport without direct supervision from the JP team. The journey provided opportunities to for the members to practice asking for tickets politely, observe and follow bus etiquette, such as giving way to others and keeping personal belongings safe, and stay aware of their stop and use visual and auditory cues to ensure they didn’t miss their destination. The members worked together, helping one another and reinforcing the team spirit that James’ Place values deeply.
Upon arriving in Basingstoke town, the group made their way to Costa, where they celebrated their successful journey with warm drinks and delicious snacks.
At James’ Place, we celebrate every achievement, big or small. This journey to Costa in Basingstoke is a shining example of what can be accomplished with guidance, teamwork, and determination. Here’s to more adventures and continued success!
Children in Need
At James’ Place, giving back to the community is a value we hold close to our hearts. This year, our members came together to support ‘Children in Need’, showcasing their enthusiasm, creativity, and teamwork through a day filled with meaningful activities. From a sponsored walk at Basingstoke Memorial Park to baking Pudsey Bear biscuits and enjoying a sensory movie session, it was a day to remember!
The day began with energy and excitement as our members laced up their walking shoes for a sponsored walk at Basingstoke Memorial Park. The group set a goal to walk a specific distance, with each step representing their commitment to making a difference for children in need.
Walking together, the members encouraged one another, enjoying the crisp air, beautiful park scenery, and the joy of moving with purpose. This activity wasn’t just about fundraising—it was also a wonderful opportunity to build stamina, stay active, strengthen friendships through shared achievements, and feel empowered by contributing to a great cause. Every step they took brought smiles to their faces and a sense of pride knowing their efforts would help other children across the UK.
After their walk, it was time to roll up their sleeves and get creative in the kitchen! Members worked together to make delicious Pudsey Bear-themed biscuits, decorating them with icing, sprinkles, and plenty of care. From shaping the dough to adding final touches, this activity sparked creativity while teaching valuable baking skills. The biscuits were a big hit, and everyone took pride in their culinary creations. Sharing the treats afterward made the experience even sweeter.
To round off the day, members gathered in the sensory room to watch BBC Children in Need together. The cozy environment, filled with soothing lights and comfortable seating, made for a perfect way to unwind. Watching the show allowed members to connect with the stories of children who benefit from the event, reinforcing the importance of their efforts earlier in the day.
A Wild Adventure
There’s nothing like a day at the zoo to spark excitement and wonder, and that’s exactly what our James’ Place members experienced on their recent trip to Marwell Zoo in Winchester. This day out was packed with incredible wildlife, festive cheer, and heartwarming moments that made it truly unforgettable.
From the moment they arrived, the group was buzzing with enthusiasm to meet the zoo’s amazing residents. With a map in hand and curiosity leading the way, they explored the sprawling grounds and encountered a wide variety of animals, including giraffes, zebras, monkeys, hippos, and for the brave members creepy crawlies. The adventure continued aboard the safari train, where members could sit back, relax, and take in the sights of the zoo from a different perspective. The gentle ride offered glimpses of the animals in their habitats and added a touch of fun to the day.
Next, the group ventured into the tropical house, where colourful birds flitted among lush greenery. The vibrant feathers and exotic sounds created a magical experience that transported everyone to a far-off paradise. What made this trip even more special was the festive atmosphere throughout the zoo. Christmas decorations and twinkling lights added a magical charm to the surroundings, reminding everyone that the holiday season was just around the corner.
After a full day of exploring, the group gathered to enjoy some hot drinks, a perfect way to warm up and reflect on their favourite moments. Sharing stories and laughter over cups of tea, coffee, and hot chocolate was the ideal way to end the adventure.
At James’ Place, we’re always looking for ways to enrich the lives of our members, and this outing was a shining example of what’s possible when we come together to explore and enjoy the world around us. Here’s to more adventures to come!
November activities showcase the incredible progress our members are making while having fun and supporting their community. November was truly a month of achievements, and we’re excited for what’s to come in December!
