Historic Celebration

This May, the community at James’ Place came together to celebrate VE Day — Victory in Europe Day, marking the end of World War II in Europe on May 8th, 1945. It was a day filled with creativity, remembrance, and connection.

Our members got hands-on with a variety of activities, creating handmade bunting in red, white, and blue, and designing bold, heartfelt VE Day posters. These creative pieces brightened our space and served as a tribute to the resilience and unity of those who lived through the war.

The celebration also included a delicious group effort in the kitchen: a pavlova decorated with strawberries, raspberries, and blueberries, reflecting the colours of the Union Jack. It was a tasty highlight of the day and a shared achievement enjoyed by all.

Mythical Messes

This week at James’ Place, we stepped into a world of wonder as part of our Magic and Mythical Creatures Week — a celebration of imagination, creativity, and just a little bit of enchantment!

One of the most exciting activities was our very own magical potion-making workshop — where science met sorcery in the most spectacular way. Members became potion master’s for the day, donning wizard hats (and safety goggles!) as they explored the fun side of chemistry.

Using safe household ingredients like baking soda, vinegar, glitter, food colouring, and even fizzy tablets, members created bubbling, fizzing, colour-changing potions that looked like they came straight out of a wizard’s laboratory.

New and Improved

We’re thrilled to unveil a truly enchanting new addition to James’ Place — our Magical Wizard Sensory Room!

Designed to spark the imagination and provide a calming, immersive experience for our members, this brand-new space is the perfect blend of magic, relaxation, and sensory stimulation.

From the moment you step inside, you’re transported into a world of wonder. Floating above is a colour-changing cloud ceiling, gently shifting through hues to create a soothing, dreamlike atmosphere — like drifting through a wizard’s sky.

On one wall, a large interactive projector brings magical landscapes to life. Members can watch dragons soar, stars twinkle, and enchanted forests glow — or simply relax as calming visuals wash over the space.

Adding to the mystical feel is a stunning glow-in-the-dark mural — a hand-painted masterpiece filled with swirling galaxies, sparkling spells, and mythical creatures that come alive under soft UV light.

The sensory room is designed to be both stimulating and calming, offering members a place to unwind, explore, and enjoy the magic of their imagination in a safe and welcoming environment.

This magical space is already becoming a favourite spot for quiet moments, creative play, and peaceful reflection

A Place for All

This month, we were delighted to host our very first ‘Open Afternoon’ at James’ Place — a meaningful event that brought together our members, their parents, carers, and key workers for an afternoon of tea, treats, and togetherness.

The atmosphere was filled with smiles and pride as families gathered to enjoy homemade scones and biscuits, lovingly prepared by our members earlier that day. The baking session was a big hit, and the delicious results made the perfect addition to our afternoon tea spread.

But the real highlight of the afternoon was the chance for members to share their progress and achievements. With support from their key workers, members proudly presented their key worker books, filled with photos, notes, and reflections on all they’ve been working on here at James’ Place — from life skills and creative projects to personal milestones and day-to-day wins.

The open afternoon provided an opportunity for parents and carers to chat with our team, ask questions, and learn more about the everyday experiences and progress of their loved ones.

It also gave members a moment to shine — to be recognised, celebrated, and encouraged.

We’re so grateful to everyone who came along and made the afternoon so special. Seeing the connections between families, staff, and members grow stronger was truly heartwarming.

We’re already looking forward to the next one!
